If you're an experienced community-engaged researcher looking to learn and exchange practical tools, “new” methods, and hard-earned insights on navigating the ethical and institutional complexities of aging research, this workshop is designed for you!

This interactive workshop will be facilitated by experienced community-based researchers, including older adults. We will draw on our experience to facilitate discussions about navigating tensions such as: institutional barriers, ethical risk assessments, and balancing organizational needs with research guidelines.

Workshop participants should come ready to discuss a case example of a tension and/or triumph (including productive tensions) in community-based research.

Objectives:
  • Offer experienced community-based researchers the opportunity to discuss barriers and successes in discovery and innovation in aging research co-designed with older adults and/or their caregivers.

  • Draw on principles of community-engaged research, introduce novel options for community engagement, and facilitate dialogue about power, positioning, and institutional navigation.

  • Share resource and tools for the long-term conduct of community-based research.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Articulate key tensions and triumphs encountered by experienced community-engaged aging researchers.

  • Identify ethical considerations relevant to long-term community-based gerontology research.

  • Strengthen professional networks and gain access to practical resources and tools for advancing equity-focused research.
